WSW-2400 24-Port Fast Ethernet SwitchIntroduction
PLANET Networks introduces the next generation of the most successful workgroup switches ever. Completely redesigned for faster throughput, support for high-speed uplink options, and leading-edge software features, new 24-port switch carries on the PLANET tradition of affordable, high-performance workgroup switching. In the following section, the term "Switch" will represent PLANET WSW-2400.
The WSW-2400 switch supports 10/100M auto-sensing on all UTP ports, for seamless migration to 100Mbps connections without time-consuming trips to the wiring closet whenever end stations are upgraded to Fast Ethernet. To further simplify network setups, all ports also automatically sense half- or full-duplex connections for high-speed server or switch-to-switch configurations.
The Switch features 24 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX ports. Besides that, there is an open slot provided on the rear panel. Users can slide a 100Base-FX fiber module (WGSW-1ST/WGSW-1SC) into this slot. The 100Base-FX fiber module will share the 12nd port of switch controller. Once the 100Base-FX fiber module slide-into the slot, the 100Base-FX LED (Module Installed), which placed on the right side of the front panel, will light on to indicate the fiber module plug into the slot.
In addition to the perfect switching features, the switch features great network management functions as well, such as SNMP, Spanning Tree Protocol, Web-based management, Telnet, and so on. All of the powerful feature will be described in the following sections.
The following sections briefly describe the functional overview of this managed Switch.
Complies with IEEE802.3, IEEE802.3u and IEEE802.3x
The front panel (See Figure 1-1) contains all the Ethernet ports, Console port and LEDs. Below sections are the detail descriptions.
Figure 1-1 Front Panel
- 10Base-T/100Base-Tx ports
Rear panel descriptionsThe Switch has 24 auto-negotiation 10Base-T/100Base-Tx ports. The ports can sensing the speed or duplex mode automatically. The ports connect over straight cables to the network interface controller card in a node, server or an Ethernet hub. If you are connecting to another Ethernet switch, you need a crossover cable to connect them.
- Uplink push button
The Switch has an uplink push button for cascading to another hub or switch, using straight-through Category5 twist-pair cable. When the 1st port is connected to a desktop, the push button is adjusted to the Normal position. If the 1st port is connected to another hub or switch, the push button had to be on the Uplink position, i.e. push down.
- Console port
The Console can be accessed from the RS-232 serial port or a telnet connection. The console port uses standard null modem cable and is set to auto-baud, 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit.
- LEDs
The LEDs on the switch provides visual presentation on the front panel to show the following status:
- Global LED
Power LED The unit is powered on and ready for use. Off The unit is powered off. Self-test LED The unit is running diagnostic self-test Diagnostic self-test is failure Off Diagnostic self-test OK
Port LED
Link/Act LED Shows 10M or 100M connection is successfully established on the port. Data is being transmitted or received on the port. Off No link established in the port. 10/100M LED The 100M IDLE symbols are detected in the segment Off No 100M IDLE symbol is detected Module Installed LED* There is a 100Base-FX fiber module slide-into the open slot on the rear panel Off No 100Base-FX fiber module in the open slot
*Remark: The MII module slot in the rear of the Switch is shared with port#12. As the LED turns on, please remove the plug connected to port#12.
The rear panel (See Figure 1-2) contains the 100Base-FX slide-in module, the AC power receptacle and power switch.Software feature explain
Figure 1-2 Rear Panel
- Power switch
The switch provides a power switch to select power on or off. When the switch in the On position, the switch starts working. When the switch in the Off position, the switch shutdown.
- AC power receptacle
The switch adjusts its power setting to any supply voltage in the range 90-240V A.C. automatically.
- MII module
The switch provides a 100BaseFX slide-in module with a SC or ST connector. The module can be slide into the open slot on the back of the switch and support only 100M half/full duplex.
- Auto-negotiation
The switch supports auto-negotiation function. The auto-negotiation is able to detect the connection speed and negotiate the operation duplex mode with a link partner automatically. The switch senses the speed and selects the best duplex mode of an attached device.
Flow control is an asynchronous communication protocol that is used between communicating devices to regulate the flow of a stream of data. If one station has received more information than it can hold in its buffers or process at one time, it signals the sender to pause the transmission until it can catch up. Flow control signaling can be performed in hardware or in software.
Up to 4 port-based VLANs can be established for each switch, to extend the broadcast domain and segment network traffic. Each of VLAN can be programmable through a WEB or Telnet. Each port of the 24-port switch can be assigned to up to four VLAN. Once power on, every port is assigned to VLAN-1 as the default. Frames from the source port will only be forwarded to the destination ports within the same VLAN domain.
There is a SNMPv1 agent and a web server provided in the module. The Switch is capable of be managed by a third party network manager. The SNMP agent will maintain the MIB data for the switch. Once a SNMP manager queries an object of MIB, the agent response in time.
WEB-based management allows easy graphical configuration and direct access to management information from anywhere on the network with a few clicks of the WEB browser. The management switch is capable of WEB-based network management software. This allows network administrators to easily access such key information as device summary, statistics, application and configuration. Network managers can access data about their network and individual hubs via the local cooperate intranet, or from any world wide web-connected PC, anywhere in the world.
The switch includes built-in support for Spanning Tree Protocol (IEEE802.1d), which detects and eliminates logical loops in the network. When multiple path exist, the switch will automatically place some ports on standby to form a network with the most efficient traffic pathways, avoiding the continual looping of frames.

The following configurations are the examples of how the switch used in your network. There are two main functions: as a segmentation switch or as a desktop switch.
- As a desktop switch
As a segmentation switch
As a backbone switch
