24-Port Fast Ethernet Switch

Installation

Package content

Before installing the management switch, verify that the package contains the following items:

If any items are missing or damaging, contact your dealer immediately.

Installing on a flat surface

The Switch can be mounted on any appropriate level surface that can safely support the weight of the hubs and their attached cables. There must be adequate space around the switch for ventilation and access cable connectors.

To install the switch on a flat surface, tabletop, shelf, etc. follow these steps:

  1. Set the switch on the flat surface and check for proper ventilation
  2. Allow at least 2 inches (5.1 cm) on each side for proper ventilation and 5 inches (12.7 cm) at the back for power cord clearance.

  3. Attach rubber feet on each marked location on the bottom of the chassis
  4. The rubber feet are optional but recommanded to keep the unit from slipping.

  5. Attach all device to the port

Installing in a rack

The Switch can be installed in most standard 19-inch racks.

To install the Switch in a rack, follow these steps:

Connecting devices to the Switch

This section describes how to connect devices to the switch ports and how to connect a console terminal to the hub Console port. You can connect the switch to any equipment that conforms to the IEEE 802.3 standard.

The Switch has 24 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX ports, which are configured with RJ-45 connectors. The ports connect via straight-through cables to the network interface card (NIC) in a node or server. (See Figure 2-2)

When connecting to another hub or switch (See the Cascading to another hub or switch section), you just need to use straight-through Category 5 twist-pair cable. The Switch has an Uplink button that controls the polarity of port 1. Means that you can connect port 1 of the Switch to another switch or hub when this button is in depressed position. When this button is in raised position, it works like another ports.

The Switch provides an RS-232 port that enables a connection to a PC or terminal for monitoring and configuring the switch. This port is a male DB-9 connector, implemented as a data terminal equipment (DTE) connection.

To use the Console port, you need the following equipment:

The terminal should have the following settings:

To connect a terminal to the console port, follow these steps:

  1. Set the terminal protocol as described above.
  2. Connect the female connector of the RS-232 cable directly to the Console port on the hub, and tighten the captive retain screws. (See Figure 2-3)
  3. Connecting the other end of the cable to a terminal or the serial connector of a PC running communication software.

You can expand the Switch by cascading to another hub or switch. One up-link push button on the front panel allows users to connect to either a hub or a desktop, using straight-through Category 5 twist-pair cable. When the 1st port is connected to a desktop, the push bottom is adjusted to the Normal position (MDI-X). If the 1st port is connected to another hub or switch, the push button has to be on the Uplink (MDI).

Slide-in the 100Base-Fx module

When you add connectivity for 100 Base-Fx transmission media, please insert the optional MII fiber-optic module in the MII Module Slot on the rear panel
